Leibrock will provide project management, client development, and personnel management as well as safety coordination and supervision of technical staff. He brings over eight years of experience in geotechnical and water resources engineering. Leibrock received a master of science in civil engineering and a bachelor of science in civil engineering from the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology.

Northern Technologies, LLC (NTI) congratulates Sam Kurachek on passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) examination. Kurachek is now recorded as an Engineering In Training (EIT). He has worked for NTI since 2015 serving as a graduate engineer, special inspector and engineering technician in the Inver Grove Heights office.
Kurachek graduated with a bachelor of science in chemical engineering from Miami University. He holds ICC Certifications in Reinforced Concrete and Spray-applied Fireproofing, ACI and Mn/DOT Certifications in Concrete Field I, and is PTI Certified Level 1 & 2 Unbonded PT – Field Installation.

Chris Myers, P.E. has been promoted to Construction Services Manager for NTI’s Fargo office. Myers will be responsible for performing engineering design calculations as required for concrete and bituminous mix designs as well as reviews of pile load tests and caisson bearing capacity. He will supervise the construction services department and work with clients to ensure their engineering and testing needs are met.
Myers joined NTI in 2011 as an engineering technician and has also served as project engineer and staff engineer during his tenure. He graduated from North Dakota State University with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering in 2010. Myers has worked on a variety of projects in North Dakota and northern Minnesota including the Sanford Medical Center, Oakport Flood Mitigation, CapX2020 – Fargo 3 Transmission Line, Border States Electric, Essentia Health Addition, Caterpillar Expansion and the NDSU Indoor Track & Field Facility.

NTI congratulates Morgan Bakeman, Jake Collins and Dwayne Watson-Gutierrez on their promotions from graduate engineers to staff engineers and to Nick Balliet on his promotion from engineering technician to graduate engineer.
Morgan Bakeman joined NTI in 2014 as an engineering technician. Upon graduating from the University of Minnesota with a bachelor of science in civil engineering and passing her Fundamentals of Engineering exam, Bakeman was promoted to graduate engineer. She holds ICC Certifications for Soils Special Inspector, Spray-Applied Fireproofing, Reinforced Concrete, and Structural Masonry as well as being MnDOT Certified in Concrete Field I and International Fire Council Certified in Firestopping.
Beginning his career with NTI in 2005 as an engineering technician, Jake Collins holds ICC Certifications for Structural Steel & Bolting, Reinforced Concrete, Spray-Applied Fireproofing, Structural Welding and Soils as well as being MnDOT Certified in Concrete Field I, Aggregate Production, Grading& Base I and PTI Certified as Level 1 Unbonded PT – Field Installation. Collins served as lead special inspector on some of our most impressive projects in Minnesota including the University of Minnesota Athletes Village and Mall of America Phase 1C. He graduated from the University of Minnesota with bachelor of science in structural engineering.
Dwayne Watson-Gutierrez holds a bachelor of science in civil engineering from the Universidad Latina de Costa Rica in Heredia, Costa Rica. Watson-Gutierrez began his career with NTI as an engineering technician and then became a graduate engineer in 2016 when he earned his EIT. He holds ICC Certifications for Reinforced Concrete and is MnDOT Certified in Concrete Field I as well as PTI 1 and 2.
Nick Balliet graduated with a bachelor of science in material science and engineering from the University of Minnesota in 2016 and joined NTI in August of that year as an engineering technician. Balliet has worked on a variety of street and utility improvements as well as building construction projects throughout the Twin Cities.

Northern Technologies, LLC (NTI) was recently selected by Thor Construction to provide special inspection and construction materials testing services for their new $36 million 92,000-square-foot retail and office complex at the southeast corner of Plymouth Avenue North and Penn Avenue. This project also includes a 620-stall parking garage. Construction is expected to begin immediately with completion anticipated by spring 2018.
NTI’s Construction Services Manager Kyler Bender, PE states, “We are so excited to be working on this significant project with Thor Construction. We admire Thor’s plans for community revitalization and workforce development and look forward to developing a strong relationship with the entire project team.”

NTI congratulates Nick Berglund on his promotion to regional manager for North Dakota. As regional manager, Berglund will be responsible for the operations and overall management of NTI’s offices in Bismarck, Fargo, Grand Forks and Minot, North Dakota. He will also be heavily involved in the strategic planning and business development activities for these offices as well as any future acquisitions in North Dakota.
Berglund has spent his 13-year career with NTI, beginning as an engineering technician intern in 2004. He worked as an engineering technician for two years and was named construction services manager in 2015. Berglund has provided construction materials testing, forensic engineering services, environmental assessments, and pre- and post-construction surveys on several construction projects for NTI such as West Fargo Schools, Essentia Hospital, Veterans Administration Hospital, Microsoft Campus, Scheels retail store, Scheels Arena, and the NDSU Track Facility.

Northern Technologies, LLC (NTI) was recently selected by the State of Minnesota, Department of Admin – Materials Management Division, to provide soil borings; collect soil samples during drilling activities; collect ground water samples during drilling operations; install monitoring wells, recovery wells, air sparge wells, vapor extraction wells, de-watering wells, injection wells, water supply wells, soil gas monitoring probes and gas vents, laser induced fluorescence (LIF) borings and electro conductivity (EC) borings; seal wells and borings and video logging wells on an as needed basis. This Contract is available to all State agencies and Cooperative Purchasing Venture members.

Morgan will be based at NTI’s Inver Grove Heights office, with responsibility for the firm’s operations across Minnesota, North Dakota and South Dakota. Morgan has over 20 years of experience in the engineering and construction industry across the upper Midwest. The first half of his career, he practiced as a geotechnical and civil engineer and, most recently, managed commercial construction projects for the largest builder in the Twin Cities.

This expands our offering of professional nondestructive testing services that can be conducted at the jobsite or in our laboratory. Our NDT services include radiography, X-ray, ultrasonic thickness, shear wave & C-scan corrosion mapping, magnetic particle, liquid penetrant, certified welding inspections, welding qualifications, quality assurance, concrete inspections, and ASNT Level III services.

Northern Technologies, LLC is pleased to announce the recent acquisition of South Dakota-based American Technical Services, Inc. (ATS). This acquisition expands NTI’s footprint to include offices in Sioux Falls and Rapid City, South Dakota, as well as new markets in several surrounding states.
For almost 25 years, ATS has provided geotechnical engineering, materials engineering and testing, environmental drilling and well installation services, and other geotechnical services to a five-state area. ATS has worked hard to establish solid roots within the state providing engineering and testing services to the commercial, agricultural, industrial, municipal, and residential industries.

Northern Technologies, LLC (NTI) is delighted to announce the expansion of our Minnesota drilling fleet through the acquisition of a new CME 750X all-terrain drill rig. The new drill rig expands on NTI’s local capabilities for performing geotechnical exploration in areas with soft terrain.
Additionally, NTI also recently acquired a new Geoprobe direct push truck mounted rig. The relatively small footprint of this rig allows for collection of continuous probe samples in lower overhead site access situations. This equipment complements our existing geotechnical rotary rigs and allows us to scope multiple types of drilling projects.
These acquisitions expand our current drilling fleet to include three CME 750x ATV drill rigs, one CME 55truck-mounted drill rig, and a truck mounted Geoprobe rig. The continued support of our existing client base, along with an ever-expanding list of new clients, has allowed NTI to invest in additional geotechnical exploration rigs. The addition of these new exploration rigs will benefit NTI clients through improved response times and capabilities. Furthermore, the expansion of NTI’s locally based geotechnical fleet places us in the upper echelon of resources amongst the local geotechnical consultant community.

Northern Technologies, LLC (NTI) was recently selected to provide construction materials testing services for the new $14.5 million Homewood Suites in West Fargo, North Dakota. Located at 825 Beaton Drive, the new four-story, 105-room, high-end hotel will be connected to the West Fargo Convention Center. Completion of the Homewood Suites Hotel is expected by 2017.
NTI’s Construction Services Manager Nick Berglund, PE states, “We have worked with Gehrtz Construction Services for many years on various projects throughout the Fargo-Moorhead area and look forward to working with them on this new hotel.”

Northern Technologies, LLC (NTI) was recently selected to provide construction materials testing services for the new $12 million Sheyenne Plaza complex in Fargo, North Dakota. Consisting of more than 124,000-square-foot, the new five-story development will feature underground parking and a main floor comprised of office space and the new home of the West Fargo VFW. Completion of Sheyenne Plaza is expected by 2017.

Northern Technologies, LLC (NTI) was recently selected to provide special inspection and testing services for the new Fargo City Hall. This new $22.5 million, 150,000 square foot facility will house Fargo’s municipal operations into the next century while adding character and appeal to community and downtown skyline. Groundbreaking for this project took place on August 22, 2016. Completion of the new city hall is expected by Fall 2018.
NTI’s project team includes Nick Berglund, PE, Dan Gibson, PE and Bret Anderson, PE. Berglund, NTI Construction Services Manager, expressed, “We’re looking forward to working with T.L. Stroh Architects and Olaf Anderson, the general contractor, on this significant project for the City of Fargo.”

As the second firm in Minnesota to receive certification from the International Firestop Council, Northern Technologies, LLC (NTI) now offers firestopping special inspections. Firestop systems protect against the passage of fire, hot gases and toxic smoke through openings in walls, floors and floor/ceiling assemblies. These may apply to through-penetrations, membrane penetrations, joints, blank openings, gaps and voids. The 2012 International Building Code requires special inspection of firestopping for buildings over 75 feet in height, and category III and IV buildings.
NTI’s certified special inspectors will check for the proper installation of firestop systems for penetrations, joints, and perimeter fire barrier systems that are essential for life safety and property protection. Verification and inspection of proper firestopping is invaluable to ensure correctness of installation, and therefore compliance with applicable code requirements.
Kyler Bender, PE, NTI’s Construction Services Manager, states, “We’re thrilled to add firestopping inspections to our service offerings to clients, building inspectors, designers and contractors. As a third-party inspector, we will perform knowledgeable and competent special inspection as defined by the International Building Code. It’s our job to make sure that these firestop systems are installed per code and manufacturer detail.”

Northern Technologies, LLC (NTI) was recently selected to provide special inspection and testing services for the University of Minnesota’s new Vet Isolation Facility on the St. Paul Campus. This new $21 million, 31,140 square foot facility will house ABLS-2 and ABSL-3 bio containment areas, along with Small Animal Holding to support University research initiatives.
NTI’s project team includes Kyler Bender, PE, Jake Collins and Morgan Loth, EIT. These team members will serve as the Independent Testing Agency (ITA) for the Vet Isolation Facility and will provide special inspections and quality control testing services in accordance with the 2015 Minnesota Building Code/2012 International Building Code and the University of Minnesota 2015 Construction Standards. NTI previously performed geotechnical exploration and evaluation for this project.

The University of Minnesota recently selected NTI to provide special inspection and testing services for their Bell Museum project. This project includes the construction of a new 92,000 gross square foot museum and planetarium on the University of Minnesota’s St Paul Campus. The museum will house new permanent exhibit gallery, special exhibit galleries, planetarium, classrooms, lobby/ event space and more. NTI’s project team includes Kyler Bender, PE, Jake Collins and Morgan Loth, EIT.

Northern Technologies, LLC (NTI) proudly announces the promotion of Debra Schroeder, PE to senior engineer, Dwayne Watson-Gutierrez to graduate engineer, and Carl Dusbabek to drill crew chief. Schroeder and Watson-Gutierrez are located in NTI’s Inver Grove Heights office with Dusbabek in NTI’s Ramsey location.
Debra Schroeder has over 16 years of experience as a geotechnical engineer and graduated from the University of South Alabama with a bachelor of science in civil engineering. She works with owners, architects, developers, facilities managers, and contractors on developing geotechnical exploration programs that address their unique project needs. .
Dwayne Watson-Gutierrez recently passed the Fundamentals of Engineering Examination and became a recorded E.I.T. He holds a bachelor of science in civil engineering from the Universidad Latina de Costa Rica in Heredia, Costa Rica and is also licensed as an engineer by the Costa Rican Association of Engineers and Architects.
Carl Dusbabek joined NTI in 2015 as a drilling crewman and has worked on many geotechnical drilling projects throughout Minnesota. As drill crew chief, Dusbabek will perform geotechnical drilling, sampling operations, classification of soils and logging the borings as well as provide supervision of other drill crew members.

Northern Technologies, LLC (NTI) proudly announces the acquisition of AQUA-Plus, Inc. AQUA-Plus specializes in contract groundwater and environmental services and serves clients throughout the Upper Midwest.
“This was absolutely a win-win situation as NTI gets an experienced group of new team members, access to an attractive set of clients, and a great business manager in Bill Canty to lead NTI’s drilling operations,” stated Ryan Benson, P.E., NTI’s regional manager of Minnesota. “AQUA-Plus will incorporate its best practices into the drilling operations at NTI, providing the clients of AQUA-Plus access to a much larger range of services, while giving the owners well-earned liquidity.”
William Canty, founding partner of AQUA-Plus, remarked, “The synergies in our respective operations were extensive, so the integration effort will be seamless for the clients and team members of both companies.” Canty formed Aqua Plus in 1995 after a 16-year career in the environmental services and testing industry. Serving as NTI’s drilling services manager, he will be located in NTI’s Ramsey office.
AQUA-Plus represents the first effort of NTI to expand its operations through acquisition in its 20-year history. The effort to join the two companies was actually started several years ago, but was accelerated by the recent investment by Arch Equity Partners (AEP) in NTI. “Bill Canty and I have known each other and worked together on various projects for many years,” commented NTI President Marc Shannon. “We talked about joining forces some time ago and both knew this made great sense, and with AEP on board to help with the details and support this effort, we could finally get this done.”

Arch Equity Partners, LLC (AEP), a private investment firm based in St. Louis, announced today it has made an investment for a controlling interest in Northern Technologies (NTI), a geotechnical engineering and testing company with operations across the Upper Midwest. Founded in 1996 by Marc Shannon, NTI has seven regional offices and offers a range of engineering and testing services for geotechnical and construction projects.
